"BES has been successfully serving Boulder County in a search and rescue capacity for more than five decades. The many officials and agencies served by BES say that BES has a proven track record and is a first-rate, highly qualified search and rescue team that continually strives for excellence."
The 11-Meter Club Founded
BES was founded as the 11-Meter Club by amateur radio operator Bill Hughes after watching two tow trucks pull apart two cars to 'extricate' the victims. Bill Hughes and the first BES members posed with the local police sergeant shortly after founding.
Incorporated as Boulder Emergency Squad
The 11-Meter Club was later renamed the 11-Meter Squad, then first incorporated as Boulder Emergency Squad in 1966, establishing the organization's formal identity.
Deputized Extrication Across Boulder County
In the 1960s and 1970s, members were deputized and performed extrication across Boulder County, establishing BES as a key partner to law enforcement.
Dive Team & Swift Water Focus
The 1980s brought a new focus on rebuilding rescue quality and training a dive team. New swift water rescue techniques were developed for the unique challenges of Boulder Creek.
Headquarters at 5048 East Pearl St.
For over 32 years, BES headquarters was located at 5048 East Pearl St., Boulder — a 2-story all-steel structure with a 3-bay vehicle garage originally owned by BES membership.
Move to 3532 Diagonal Highway
BES moved into the building at 49th and the Diagonal highway — a 6-bay, custom-remodeled facility with office space, meeting rooms and living quarters, remodeled from a machine shop owned by an early squad member.
Wildland Fire Team Established
BES established its dedicated Wildland Fire Team, expanding the organization's capabilities to respond to increasingly severe fire seasons. The team quickly became a critical resource for Boulder County's mountain communities, responding to major fires including the Calwood, Coal Creek Canyon, and Marshall fires.
BCSO Designated UAS / Drone Team
BES was designated by the Boulder County Sheriff's Office as the county's primary UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) team. BES drone operators provide aerial reconnaissance for search operations, wildland fire support, and disaster response across Boulder County's challenging terrain.
BCSO Designated Wide Area Search Management Team
BES was designated by the Boulder County Sheriff's Office as the county's Wide Area Search Management team, providing expert coordination and management for large-scale search operations. This designation recognizes BES's proven capability to organize and direct multi-agency searches across Boulder County's diverse terrain.
Comprehensive Technical Rescue Organization
BES has grown into a comprehensive technical rescue organization with 13 disciplines, serving all of Boulder County through close partnerships with the Sheriff's Office, EMS, and fire agencies.
